The Julien Lestel Company started at the Espace Pierre Cardin in January 2007 for the performance of its first choreography Les Âmes Frères. Today, it has eighteen choregraphies in its repertoire and is composed of eleven dancers from different backgrounds who reveal their own individuality while remaining in the modern neoclassical style that characterizes the company.
"My research is centered on the creation of unrestrained, fluid movements, but also on fractured ones with breaks in rhythm, inducing an emotion so that the spectator can be carried into a combined dynamic of power, sensuality and poetry, all highlighted by the dancers."
Aside from performances, open rehearsals and discussions with the audiences, in the form of talks with the audiences, the company has embarked on an awareness campaign where it interacts with all kinds of people through educational projects and choreographic workshops. For example, in the academic sector, from kindergarten to high school as well as with teenagers with an autistic disorder or mental disability, but also in prisons and in retirement homes and hospitals.
"In this context, my aim is to make dance accessible to everyone so that it can become a means of expression and fulfilment for all."
Supported by the Departmental Council of Bouches-du-Rhône and mainly by the city of Marseille, the company also receives grants from foundations or private partners. The Julien Lestel Company has been in a long term residency at the Massy Opera since 2013, with the support of the DRAC Île de France.
